Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Porto, Portugal!

Porto -- a UNESCO World Heritage site -- ranks as northern Portugal's most important city, lending its name to both the Portuguese nation and its famed wine. The waterside 'zona ribeirinha' and bustling downtown prove ideal for strolling, with other attractions including the Stock Exchange Palace, the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, the church of Cedofeita, the Clerigos tower and church with gilded interior carvings, and the church of Carmo, with tiled facades. Museums range from the Soares dos Reis, Casa de Serralves for modern art to the Casa-Museu de Guerra Junqueiro and the Romantic Style Museum of Quinta da Macieirinha. The Port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia provides free tastings of the famed port wine. The northern region's Douro river winds past mountains and cliffs until it reaches the Atlantic near the city of Porto. Dams make the river navigable, which translates to cruise boats depart from Porto to the Douro region.

Between Mesao Frio and Pinhao lies the stretch where the valley sides are lined with terraced vineyards that produce the port wine. The region also is famed for signs of prehistoric men in ancient cave paintings in Vila Nova de Foz Coa. Dotting nearby landscape are medieval castles, convents, and Romanesque churches, plus manor houses such as the Baroque mansion at Mateus, near Vila Real. In the northeast region of Tras-os-Montes, popular pastimes range from mountain trekking or canoeing to relaxation in spa towns of Carvalhelhos, Chaves, and Pedras Salgadas. Vidago offers a splendid park with swimming pools and golf. Porto region accommodations range from grand old hotels to sprawling golf resorts, and chains with brands well known in the U.S. from Best Western to Holiday Inn.
